Buddy Burners was an awesome experience that our class enjoyed. The day this event took place was Friday October 6th, 2000 at Parkview school. This activity was done to find out what it would be like to survive and cook meals in the wilderness. We used coffee cans and small cat food cans. Then Mr. Dunlap cut two slits on the top of the coffee cans and four holes on the bottom for the fire to get air. Then we cut pieces of cardboard and rolled them up. Next we stuck the rolled cardboard in the small cans. Mr. Dunlap gave us some twine to use as wicks. Three pieces of twine were stuck in the cardboard to use as wicks. Overnight, Mr. Dunlap poured hot wax over the wicks and cardboard. For this activity you need a partner and those two students will choose two other pairs of two to be in their group. Each group will need to have a grown-up with them.
Before you start to cook you need to get some supplies. The following is what we needed to bring:
The grown ups lit the wicks then we were ready to cook. We set the food we wanted to cook on the coffee can, after waiting for it to get hot. We flipped it once in a while in order to cook it correctly. After one type of food was done, we put on the other food. The food was delicious and an exciting way to get an idea about what it's like trying to survive in the wilderness!
